Itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After breakfast, depart from Kampala for an 8–9-hour journey to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in southwestern Uganda. Along the way, stop at the Equator for photographs and the unique opportunity to stand in both hemispheres at once, then visit the Igongo Cultural Centre to learn about the history and traditions of the Ankole people. Continue through Mbarara and the scenic highlands of southwestern Uganda, known for their rolling hills, rich biodiversity, beautiful landscapes, and abundant birdlife, before arriving in the Bwindi region in the evening.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Begin the day with an early transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking guidelines before entering the forest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, and once found, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, you may enjoy a guided birding walk or visit the Batwa community to learn about their unique culture, traditions, and former forest-based way of life.
Day 3: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishasha
After breakfast, travel to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, a region characterized by acacia woodlands, open savannah, and the meandering Ishasha River. Ishasha is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which are often seen resting in fig trees. Enjoy a game drive through this unique ecosystem before continuing to the northern sector of the park for further wildlife viewing and exploration.
Day 4: Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
Set out early for a morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you may encounter elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hyenas, antelopes, and a variety of bird species. Later, embark on a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. The channel is renowned for its large concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and water birds, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and photography.
Day 5: Kyambura Gorge Primate Walk and Return to Kampala
On your final day, visit Kyambura Gorge for a guided primate walk in search of habituated chimpanzees while enjoying the dramatic scenery and rich biodiversity of this unique forested gorge. After the walk, begin the return journey to Kampala via the Kasese–Fort Portal route, passing through scenic countryside and tea plantations before arriving in the city later in the day.
