7 Days gorilla trekking and wildlife safari

Trip Over View

This 7-day safari showcases Uganda’s incredible diversity of wildlife and primates, combining chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, game viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park, mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and a walking safari in Lake Mburo National Park. From tracking chimpanzees and gorillas in lush tropical forests to spotting tree-climbing lions, elephants, hippos, and zebras on the savannah, this journey offers a perfect blend of adventure, wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, and breathtaking landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

After a safari briefing in Kampala, depart for Kibale Forest National Park, traveling through scenic countryside and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed conservation area known for its rich birdlife and diverse primate species, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking, Kazinga Channel Cruise and Evening Game Drive

Begin the day with a briefing at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre before entering Kibale Forest in search of habituated chimpanzees. The forest is home to the highest concentration of primates in East Africa and offers opportunities to encounter other monkey species, birds, butterflies, and forest wildlife. After the trek, continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park and enjoy a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, where large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and water birds gather along the shores. Later, embark on an evening game drive in search of lions, leopards, hyenas, antelopes, and other wildlife.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge

Explore the Kasenyi Plains on an early morning game drive, one of the best areas in Queen Elizabeth National Park for spotting lions, elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, and other wildlife. In the afternoon, visit the dramatic Kyambura Gorge for a guided chimpanzee trekking experience within its unique underground forest ecosystem, which is home to habituated chimpanzees and a variety of bird species.

Day 4: Transfer to Bwindi via the Ishasha Sector

Travel south through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its rare tree-climbing lions often seen resting in fig trees. Along the way, enjoy wildlife viewing opportunities including elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, hyenas, and leopards before continuing to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience

After an early morning briefing by park rangers, set off on an unforgettable trek through Bwindi’s dense rainforest in search of a mountain gorilla family. Trekking can take several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, but the reward is a magical hour spent observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Later, visit the Batwa community to learn about their traditional forest lifestyle, medicinal practices, local craftsmanship, brewing techniques, music, and dance performances.

Day 6: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park and Evening Game Drive

Depart Bwindi and travel to Lake Mburo National Park, a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, acacia woodland, and lakes. Upon arrival, enjoy a game drive through the park, where you may encounter zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs, and a variety of bird species unique to this ecosystem.

Day 7: Walking Safari and Return to Kampala

Begin the day with a guided walking safari from the Rwonyo area, offering a unique opportunity to explore the park on foot while observing wildlife such as zebras, buffaloes, impalas, topis, and, with some luck, the elusive sitatunga antelope. After the walk, begin the journey back to Kampala, arriving in the evening with unforgettable memories of Uganda’s remarkable wildlife, landscapes, and cultural heritage.
