This 5-day Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari takes you to the spectacular Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas and rare golden monkeys. The safari combines thrilling primate encounters, a hike to Mount Bisoke’s scenic crater lake, and a cultural exploration of Kigali, offering an unforgettable adventure in the Land of a Thousand Hills.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your Mzanga Safaris guide will pick you up from Kigali and transfer you to Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. The drive offers breathtaking views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, rural communities, and the majestic Virunga Volcanoes. Upon arrival, spend the remainder of the day exploring the surrounding area and enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery while preparing for the exciting activities ahead.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early morning briefing by park rangers, begin your gorilla trekking adventure in Volcanoes National Park. Accompanied by experienced guides, trek through the forest in search of one of the habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek may take between 2 and 5 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Once found, spend one unforgettable hour observing these magnificent primates in their natural habitat.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking

Today, set out to track the rare and endangered golden monkeys that inhabit the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park. Watch these energetic primates as they move through the trees and learn about their behavior, habitat, and conservation. Along the way, you may also encounter other monkey species, colorful birds, and butterflies.

Day 4: Mount Bisoke Hike and Crater Lake Visit

Begin the day with a guided hike to the summit of Mount Bisoke, one of the most scenic volcanoes in the Virunga Mountain range. The hike takes you through lush vegetation and montane forest before reaching the stunning crater lake at the summit. Enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes and landscapes while learning about the mountain’s ecological and cultural significance. After the hike, return to Kigali.

Day 5: Kigali City Tour and Departure

After breakfast, enjoy a guided city tour of Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft centers, colorful markets, and other cultural landmarks that provide insight into the country’s history and remarkable development. Later, your Mzanga Safaris guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your safari.
