This 3-day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari is an ideal short adventure that combines one of Africa’s most sought-after wildlife experiences with Rwanda’s rich conservation heritage and stunning mountain scenery. The highlight is undoubtedly the close encounter with mountain gorillas, complemented by visits to the Musanze Caves, Karisoke Research Center, and Kigali’s historical sites, making it a rewarding and well-rounded safari experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Mzanga Safaris guide who will brief you about the safari before departing for Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. The drive offers beautiful views of Rwanda’s rolling hills and picturesque countryside.

Upon arrival in the Volcanoes region, enjoy a scenic excursion around the park area where you will admire the magnificent volcanic mountain ranges that make this region one of Africa’s most spectacular destinations. Your guide will provide an overview of the upcoming gorilla trekking experience and other activities included in the safari.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Musanze Cave Exploration

After an early morning transfer to the park headquarters, you will attend a briefing by park rangers on the rules and guidelines for gorilla trekking. You will then be assigned a gorilla family and accompanied by experienced guides into the forest.

The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once located, you will spend a memorable hour observing these gentle giants as they feed, interact, and move through the forest.

After the trekking experience, proceed to the Musanze Caves for an exciting exploration of this extensive underground cave system, home to numerous bat species and fascinating geological formations. Later, continue to the Karisoke Research Center, founded by renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, where you will learn about the history of mountain gorilla conservation and ongoing research efforts in the region.

Day 3: Kigali City Tour and Departure

After breakfast, depart the Volcanoes region and return to Kigali. Depending on your departure schedule, visit one of Rwanda’s significant genocide memorial sites to gain insight into the country’s history, resilience, and remarkable transformation.

After the city tour, your Mzanga Safaris guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari.
